What happens when a deck is built without a proper substructure
A weak deck rarely announces itself straight away. It starts as a slight bounce underfoot on one section, a board that's begun to cup or split, or green algae building up in a shaded corner. Underneath, joists set too far apart are flexing under load, or a support post has moved because its footing was never taken down to firm, undisturbed ground.
The real damage happens where ventilation was skipped. Boards laid tight to the ground, or a frame boxed in without any airflow, sit in permanently damp air.
